Capacity View
Overview
Capacity Planning provides a way to estimate, track, and compare team capacity, budget, and work commitments across iterations. It supports both high-level and detailed views through the Requirements and Tasks backlog levels, adapting calculations and terminology based on how teams manage their work. The Capacity view summarizes this data by project, team, and iteration, helping teams plan effectively and monitor progress over time.
Backlog Level
Capacity Planning operates in two modes, determined by the Backlog Level.
- Requirements: A simplified view that calculates capacity based on Story Points, Effort, or Size, depending on the team’s process.
- Tasks: A detailed view that tracks work using hours from Original Estimates and Completed Work at the Task level, providing more granular insight into capacity.
note
The labels, tooltips, and calculation fields adapt to the selected Backlog Level, so the terminology and metrics you see may differ slightly between views.
Capacity View Explained

In the Capacity view, data is summarized by Project, Team, and Iteration:
- Project name (IP): Click the arrow to expand or collapse the project and all teams.
- Team name (IP Team): Click the arrow to expand or collapse the team.
- Totals card (white): Aggregates budget, capacity, and commitments across iterations
- Iteration cards (blue): Show data for each Iteration
- Iteration name (2026 - 9): Click to open the team’s Taskboard and view all tasks for this iteration.
- Selected Iteration (light blue): Marks the active iteration. Used for entering data or viewing full card when zoomed out (e.g. Months).
- Blue dotted line: Indicates the iteration extends beyond the selected date range
- Capacity Metrics Pills:
- Sprint Capacity: Click to open the team’s capacity view for this iteration.
- Sprint Commitment: Click to view work items assigned to the team for the selected iteration.
- Sprint Commitment: Click to view work items completed during this iteration.
- Velocity Metrics Pills:
- Planned: Click to view all Work Items that were in the Iteration on its start date.
- Completed Late: Click to view all Work Items that were completed after the Iteration's end date.
- Incomplete: Click to view all in-progress Work Items that were not completed before the Iteration's end date.
tip
- When entering Budget or Forecast data you can press tab to quickly move to the next iteration.
- Adjusting the date range can reduce the number of iterations shown in the Capacity view, improving performance.
